Shiatsu is a Japanese "finger pressure" healing therapeutic massage. In treatment, the therapist applies pressure to the acupuncture points, where the Qi is insufficient, or its flow is distorted or stagnated, of the body with thumbs, fingers and palms. When the right amount of holding pressure is applied the flow returns to normal, and the excess or blocked energy is dispersed. Deep relaxation and balance can be experienced, stimulating the body's own natural healing process.
In western terms, shiatsu calms the over-active sympathetic nervous system and promotes the healing, restful state of the parasympathetic nervous system. Circulation improves, stiff muscles loosen, and tension fades.
Shiatsu can help treat pain and prevent physical dysfunction and help maintain tissue health by increasing circulation. Regular Shiatsu treatments reduce stress, pain, promote general wellbeing and slow down the aging process.
Many of today's health problems can benefit from Shiatsu because the manipulation of soft tissues affects so many of our bodily systems. The benefits of Shiatsu treatments are extensive, it has a therapeutic affect and improves health by acting directly on the muscular, nervous, circulatory and lymphatic (immune) systems.
